An Introduction to Adoption

Thank you for reaching out to us about adoption. The four attorneys here at Kirsh & Kirsh have 100+ years of combined experience practicing adoption law. We know you have many questions and are here to walk you through every step toward a successful adoption.

For interstate adoptions our services include compliance with the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC), a law which regulates an adoption of a child from one state to another. Each state has an ICPC office. If you live outside of Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, or Tennessee, and would like to work with us, you will need to consult an adoption attorney in your state to confirm that none of the following will prevent your adoption from receiving approval from your state’s ICPC office:

  3. Any other aspect of working with our firm or provision of your state’s laws or ICPC regulations.

Please follow the steps below to watch our video and set up a free initial consultation with one of our attorneys.

01

Step one: Introduction

Thank you for contacting us. Our law firm was established in 1981, and we have over 100 years of combined experience practicing adoption law.  Since then, we have helped prospective adoptive parents - individuals and couples - realize their dreams of parenthood through successful adoptions in Indiana and nationwide.

While we cannot guarantee your journey will be without bumps or even detours in the road, we can promise that we will be there to help you along the way. Our entire staff spends every working hour assisting people with adoptions.

Step two: Review our estimated list of expenses

This document should address something that is, no doubt, one of your biggest questions as you begin this process.

As always, if you have any questions at all about this document, please don't hesitate to ask.

03

Step three: Learn more about Adoption Tax Credits

For most families, the Federal Government assists with $14,080 of adoption expenses in the form of a tax refund. You will need to speak with your tax accountant to understand the details of the program. However, in general terms, families earning less than $211,160 a year (adjusted gross income) in 2019 will get a tax refund equal to their adoption expenses up to $14,080. The credit is reduced for families earning more than $211,160 but less than $251,160. Families earning more than $251,160, are not eligible to receive the credit.

Another requirement of the credit is that the family has paid net Federal income taxes equal to, or greater than, the amount of the refund being requested. The State of Indiana also gives a modest tax credit for Indiana residents who qualify for the federal tax credit.

Step four: Follow us on social media

Social media is the absolute best way to stay in the loop with us. We post a wide variety of information that will help you through this process.

05

Step five: Watch our adoption video

Watch our slightly over 2 hour, professionally produced Adoption Information Video either at our office or from the comfort of your own home.

Our video is a very effective way to answer many of the most commonly asked questions about adoption. The video also provides a basic understanding of how we may help you become successful in adopting through our adoption law practice. The video addresses, in some detail, adopting through our office, including the costs, the procedures, the risks, and how to find a baby to adopt.

If you choose to work with us, it is mandatory that you watch the video, even if you have previously adopted elsewhere.

Our goal of requiring potential clients to watch this video is to provide you as much information as possible, so that you can make a well-informed decision about what could possibly be one of the most important decisions of your life.

Whether you choose to watch the video in the comfort of your own home or in our office, there is no charge for meeting with one of our attorneys. If you choose to watch the video in our office you will meet with one of our attorneys directly after. Alternatively, many prospective clients have told us that they prefer to watch the video before coming to our office. Doing so gives them a chance to reflect on what they have learned in the video and better gather their thoughts and questions prior to sitting down with one of our attorneys.

There is no charge for the initial consultation with one of our attorneys.

Watch the video at home:

After you pay for the video using the link above, it may take us up to 24 hours to email you the login info to view the video. If you have not received an email after 24 hours, you can email michelle@kirsh.com.

06

Step six: Your free attorney consultation

After you watch the entire video, it is time to schedule a meeting with Steve, Joel, Grant, or Rob Kirsh. Your meeting may take place either at our office, via phone call or Skype call. To schedule your meeting please call Michelle Freeman at our office at 317-575-5555.
