If I Give Up My Baby For Adoption, Can I Receive Money For The Baby Or For Living Expenses?
Getting money for the baby and receiving living expenses are NOT the same. No state allows adoptive parents to give a birth mother money for the baby. In fact, doing so in many states would constitute a crime. In Indiana, as an example, Indiana Code § 35-46-1-9 makes it a felony to pay or receive money for the baby. However, Indiana, like many states allows an expectant mother or birth mother to receive living expenses to help her with her pregnancy-related expenses during her pregnancy and for the postpartum period.
