What to Expect When Placing a Baby for Adoption
I was facing an unplanned pregnancy and began considering placing my baby for adoption. I felt overwhelmed by emotions, questions, and uncertainty about the future.
I learned that adoption is a process built around your choices. Understanding what to expect can help you feel more confident and prepared as you explore whether adoption is the right path for you and your baby.
When I connected with the adoption attorneys at Kirsh & Kirsh, they took the time to answer my questions and explain every option available to me. There was no pressure and no judgment. Their adoption services are free for birthmothers who choose to move forward with them.
An Adoption Plan
One of the biggest surprises for me was discovering how much control I had throughout the adoption process. If you decide to move forward with putting your baby up for adoption, you will have the opportunity to create an adoption plan.
Your adoption plan can include:
- The type of adoptive family you would like for your baby
- Whether you want an open, semi-open, or closed adoption
- How much contact you would like with the adoptive family
- What kind of communication you want after placement
- What you would like your hospital experience to look like
Choosing an Adoptive Family
You can take as much time as you need to find a family that feels like the right fit for your child. At Kirsh & Kirsh, prospective adoptive families are carefully screened and prepared for adoption. You’ll have the opportunity to review family profiles and learn more about their lives, values, and hopes for the future.
The Hospital Experience
The hospital stay can be one of the most emotional parts of the adoption process, which is why creating a hospital plan can be so helpful. You’ll have the opportunity to decide:
- Who you want with you during labor and delivery
- Whether the adoptive family will be present
- How much time you’d like to spend with your baby
- What placement arrangements you feel comfortable with
Having a plan in place can help ensure that your wishes are respected during this important time.
What Happens After Placement?
Life after placement looks different for every birth mother.
Some women choose ongoing contact through open adoption, while others prefer a more private arrangement. The level of communication depends on the adoption plan you create and the relationship you establish with the adoptive family.
You Don’t Have to Go Through This Alone
Since 1981, adoption attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (sometimes misspelled “Kirsch & Kirsch”) have supported birth mothers with compassion, clarity, and respect. Having more than 110 years of combined adoption law experience they focus on helping expectant mothers understand their options.

Positive adoption language Disclaimer:
The narrative is not the words of an individual woman but based upon feedback we have received from birth mothers over the last 4 decades.
Please understand that these blogs are written in a way to use language that people use when searching for help with their adoption plans. Unfortunately, while all of us understand what positive adoption language means, most expectant moms who come to us at first do not understand what that means. The most common search term on the Internet for pregnant moms is “How do I give up my baby for adoption.” If we do not include those words in our blog posts and instead put “How do I create an adoption plan for my baby,” then our website will not show up in most expectant moms’ search results in Google.
