What to Know Before Giving Your Baby Up for Adoption

Are you thinking about giving your baby up for adoption? Choosing the right support can make all the difference.

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Since 1984, adoption attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (sometimes misspelled as “Kirsch & Kirsch”) has supported birth mothers with compassion, clarity, and respect. With more than 110+ years of combined adoption law experience handing adoptions in Indiana and throughout the country, we help you understand your options.

Staying Connected

For many birth mothers, the story does not end at placement. Most adoptions today are open or semi-open, meaning there is ongoing contact between you and the adoptive family.  Closed adoption, where there is no contact, is still an option, but it is the birth mother’s choice.

You Stay in Control

At Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C., you remain in charge of every decision. You decide:

  • Whether adoption is the right path for you
  • The type of adoption is open, semi-open, or closed
  • The family that will raise your child

Counseling and Support

Ongoing counseling after placement is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. If you are in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Carmel, Fishers, Bloomington, Hammond, Gary, Muncie, Lafayette, Terre Haute, Kokomo, Anderson, or Greenwood there are counseling resources available to you, and we can help you access them.

How Does Adoption Work

A call or message is all it takes.  We will explain your rights, your choices, and the resources available to you. If you move forward, you will review profiles of adoptive families and choose the one that feels right to you.

You will decide what kind of relationship you want with the adoptive family after placement.

When your baby is born, you will have as much time as you want together. You can sign your consent any time after birth. Once signed, the decision is legally final.

You are Not Alone

No matter where you are in your journey, support is always available 24/7.  There is no judgment. Just honest guidance, compassionate care, and the reassurance that whatever you decide, you don’t have to face it alone.

Positive adoption language Disclaimer:

Please understand that these blogs are written in a way to use language that people use when searching for help with their adoption plans. Unfortunately, while all of us understand what positive adoption language means, most expectant moms who come to us at first do not understand what that means. The most common search term on the Internet for pregnant moms is “How do I give up my baby for adoption.” If we do not include those words in our blog posts and instead put “How do I create an adoption plan for my baby,” then our website will not show up in most expectant moms’ search results in Google.
