If I Give My Baby Up For Adoption, Why Do I Have To Fill Out A Detailed Medical And Social History Background Form?

If I Give My Baby Up For Adoption, Why Do I Have To Fill Out A Detailed Medical And Social History Background Form?

While in certain circumstances, you may put up your baby for adoption without completing a background form, consider these reasons for not only filling one out but doing so in as much detail as possible:

  1. A birth mother who gives her baby up for adoption or, more correctly, makes an adoption plan for the child, does so because she loves her child and wants more for her child than she feels that she can provide at that moment in her life. Filling out a detailed background form is consistent with her motivations for pursuing adoption.
  2. If the adoptive parents know that a particular medical condition runs in the birth mother’s family, they can look out for that condition in providing better medical care for her child.
  3. Likewise, if a birth mother has a special talent, interest or skill, and the adoptive parents know about it, they can help her child foster that talent, interest, or skill.
  4. Probably the most important reason relates to a concern that nearly every expectant mother and birth mother has when thinking about adopting out their newborns What will my child think of me for having made the decision I made? The very act of filling out a background in as much detail as possible shows the child that his or her birth mother and birth father, if he is involved, made a conscious, intentional decision to put the child’s needs ahead of their own needs. Or to say it differently, a parent who abandons their child, or worse, does not take the time to leave for the child detailed background information.

POSITIVE ADOPTION LANGUAGE DISCLAIMER:  Please understand that these blog posts are written in a way to use language that people use when searching for help with their adoption plans.  Unfortunately, while all of us understand what positive adoption language means, most expectant moms that come to us at first do not understand what that means. The most common search term on the Internet for expectant moms is “how do I give up my baby for adoption”.  If we do not include those words in our blog posts, and instead put “how do I create an adoption plan for my baby” then our website will not show up in most expectant mom’s search results in Google.
