February 24, 2015 – 'Baby boxes' could be coming to Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – In an effort to reduce the number of abandoned infant deaths, the Indiana Legislature is looking into a plan that would allow for special incubator ‘baby boxes’ to be installed at all safe haven sites around the state. The boxes would not be required, but supporters hope they can get them installed at most, if not all, safe haven sites around the state, if the bill becomes law. If the bill is signed into law, it would take effect in July 2016. This bill, if passed, would make Indiana the first state in the country to enact such legislation. Other countries like, South Korea, Canada and Hungary all have ‘baby boxes’.

The bill is expected to go before the full House today, February 24th, If approved it would then go before the Senate.
